   For My Friend

for My Friend

standing in my shades and cowboy girl boots
inside of McDonald's
I watched her politely sneak in wearing her
round black shoes
she had soft high cheeks and said my name

she asked me why I had on my sunglasses
and I showed her
not a bruise
just no makeup but that was not so unusual

she asked me if I wrote still
I said sometimes
like now for people like her maybe who said
they wanted you to

my not visiting
my being supposed to not like people
my being closed off to some as if it's
bothersome

writing because I have to
it's like blinking
